The PSTN switch-off

The UK phone network goes digital in 2027

BT and Openreach are switching off the old analogue network on 31 January 2027. Every business still on a traditional phone line needs to move to internet calling before then. Smart Numbers is that move, and we can have you ready in good time.

Deadline 31 Jan 2027 No new hardware UK support

Why it matters

The copper network is being retired because the parts and skills to maintain it are running out. Once it's gone, anything still plugged into it goes quiet. The good news: digital calling is cheaper, more flexible, and quick to set up.

On the old network

What stops working after the switch-off

It isn't just phones. Anything that rides on a copper line needs checking and moving across before the deadline.

Analogue phone lines

ISDN phone systems

ADSL / FTTC broadband

Alarms & door entry

Card & EPOS machines

Fax, lift lines & telecare

The answer is VoIP

Switch-off questions, answered

When does the PSTN switch off?
The analogue phone network (PSTN) and ISDN switch off on 31 January 2027. Anything still running on those lines stops working from that date.
What is the PSTN?
The Public Switched Telephone Network is the old copper phone network that has carried calls for decades. It's being retired in favour of calling over the internet (VoIP).
Do I need to do anything now?
Yes. Openreach has already stopped selling new analogue lines in many areas, so the sooner you move to a digital service the smoother it is. Talk to us and we'll plan the switch around your business.
Will I lose my phone number?
No. Your existing number can be ported to Smart Numbers and then rings on any device you choose.
