Getting started
The big-picture questions we hear most when people first land on the site.
What is a virtual landline?+
A virtual landline is a UK phone number that lives in the cloud rather than being wired to an exchange. Calls to it ring on whatever device you choose, a mobile, a desk phone, a softphone, an app, and you can change the destination any time. Same experience for the caller, far more flexible to manage.
Who is Smart Numbers right for?+
Sole traders and SMEs who want to look established without publishing a personal mobile, multi-region businesses that need a presence in different towns, public-sector / charity bodies running 0300 lines, and larger brands running national 0345 / 0333 numbers. If you need a UK phone number, we can probably help.
How quickly can I be live?+
New numbers are typically active in hours. If you're porting an existing number from another provider, it usually takes a few working days, we keep you updated and there's no break in service during the handover.
Do I need any new equipment?+
No. Virtual numbers ring on devices you already have, mobile, desk phone, softphone or our MobeX app. If you want VoIP handsets we can supply them, but it's optional.
Is there a contract?+
No minimum contract. Cancel any service with four weeks' notice. Rentals and service changes are billed in advance.
Where are you based?+
We're a UK business with UK-based support. Average pickup time is under 30 seconds.

Numbers & prefixes
Which UK prefix is right for you, what they cost to call, and what they signal.
What does it cost the caller to dial an 03 number?+
No more than a national-rate call to an 01 / 02 number, and 03 calls count toward inclusive minutes the same way. This applies from every kind of line, landline or mobile.
Is 0333 a premium-rate number?+
No. 0333 numbers are a low-cost (often free) alternative to premium prefixes. Calling them costs the same as calling any other landline. Most fixed and mobile networks include 0333 in their bundles.
What's the difference between 0345 and 0333?+
Both are 03 numbers and identical for the caller. 0345 reads as the modern equivalent of 0845 and is often used by established national brands; 0333 is newer, with more available combinations and a more neutral feel. Pick whichever fits the brand you want to project.
Who can have an 0300 number?+
0300 is restricted by Ofcom to the public sector, charities and not-for-profit organisations. We'll verify eligibility before allocating one.
What's the catch with 0800 freephone numbers?+
There isn't a catch, 0800 calls are free from UK landlines and mobiles. The cost sits with the number owner. 0800 is great for sales and customer-service lines where you want to remove the friction of dialling.
Can I have a number from a town where I don't live?+
Yes, that's the whole point of a virtual local number. Pick from 600+ UK area codes and route calls to wherever you actually work.
Is a London 0207 better than a 0208 or 0203?+
It's a brand call. 0207 reads as central London, 0208 as outer London, 0203 is the newest pool with more memorable combinations. None costs more to dial than any other 020 number.

Porting an existing number
Moving a number from another provider to Smart Numbers.
Can I keep my existing phone number?+
Yes, we port from most other UK telecoms providers. Start a port via the wizard and we'll handle the paperwork with the losing provider end-to-end.
How long does porting take?+
Typically 5–10 working days, depending on the losing provider. Some take longer, we'll keep you posted throughout, and you don't lose service during the transition.
Will I lose calls during the port?+
No. We coordinate cut-over with the losing provider so calls keep ringing through to your existing line until the moment of switch-over, then route through us.
What does porting cost?+
We don't charge to port a number in. Some losing providers may charge an exit fee, that's between you and them.
Can I port a mobile number?+
We focus on UK landline numbers (01/02/03/08). For pure mobile porting, talk to us and we'll help you figure out the right route.
What if I lost my old landline number, can I get it back?+
Sometimes yes. If the number hasn't been re-allocated by the previous provider we can often retrieve it. Send us the details and we'll check.

Call features & management
Bolt-ons that sit on top of your number, recording, queues, voicemail-to-email and more.
What call features do you offer?+
Call recording, call queuing, auto-attendant / IVR, voicemail-to-email, divert on busy, call whisper, welcome message, call statistics and more. Layer any combination on top of any number.
What is call whisper?+
A short message played to you (not the caller) before the call connects, typically the source of the call, e.g. 'Google Ads' or 'Website'. Useful for tuning advertising spend.
How does voicemail-to-email work?+
Voicemails left on your number are delivered as audio attachments to whichever email addresses you specify, no need to dial in to retrieve them.
Can I record calls?+
Yes, switch recording on per number via the control panel. You're responsible for telling callers calls are recorded (we can play an automated notice for you).
Can I build an IVR / menu system?+
Yes. Build menus, time-of-day routing, holiday schedules, queues and overflow, either via the control panel or with help from our team.
Can I see call stats?+
Yes. We provide one of the most detailed call-stats packages in the UK, by number, by source, by time, by destination. Useful for measuring response to advertising.

VoIP & connectivity
Running your phone service over the internet, what's needed and what changes.
What is VoIP?+
Voice over Internet Protocol, phone calls carried over your internet connection instead of a traditional phone line. The caller doesn't notice; you get more flexibility and lower call costs.
Do I need fast internet for VoIP?+
Not particularly fast, a decent broadband connection is plenty. As a rough rule each concurrent VoIP call needs around 100 Kbps. Stability matters more than raw speed.
Will VoIP work on 4G / 5G?+
Yes. The MobeX app runs over 4G or 5G as well as Wi-Fi. Useful for home workers and people on the move.
What happens if my internet goes down?+
Calls divert to a fallback destination you set, usually a mobile. So you keep taking calls even if the internet drops.
Can I keep my existing handsets?+
Sometimes, depends on the make and model. Talk to us with the details. If you need new ones we supply a range of business-grade VoIP handsets.
Is VoIP cheaper than a traditional landline?+
Almost always, yes, especially once you factor in line rental, international calls and the ability to run multiple users off one bill. Send us your current bill and we'll quote like-for-like.
